Family Portraits in Liberty Station

I had a lot of fun meeting up with some friends for family portraits at Liberty Station this weekend. Their son was a little shy at first, but when we found some daisies next to the fountain on the south promenade, he opened right up. There's really nothing like watching toddlers interact with the world. A few flowers, a bike rack--everything is an opportunity for fun and exploration. libertystation1

Poway Family Photos

It's always a special honor for me to be able to work with families from out of town. Back in October, a cousin of mine from Orange County contacted me about the possibility of doing a photo shoot with her and her family--they were looking to have a quick weekend getaway, and a holiday portrait session made for a great opportunity to do just that. We met up in Old Poway Park this weekend and had a great time catching up and creating some fun family portraits.

Family Photos in Encinitas

Seems like new places was a bit of a theme for me this weekend. I'd never been to Cottonwood Creek Park in Encinitas before, but my best friends--whom I've known since college--suggested it when they asked me to do their annual family photos, and it turned out to be quite nice. My favorite part of the afternoon was the impromptu game of hide-and-seek--I don't remember whose idea it was, but their daughter loved it, and it made for some extremely cute photos, including the first one below. I love for my sessions to be full of fun for kids and parents alike, because that's when the magic happens in the photos.

Solana Beach Family Photos

One of the things I love about living in San Diego is how much variety there is around the city and county. Even after living here for almost eight years, I'm still finding new places. For their shoot this weekend, this family suggested Fletcher Cove Park in Solana Beach. I'd never been there before, but I'm always up for exploring a new place, so I was excited to check it out. We met Saturday morning, and despite the early hour and the still chilly temperature, the two kids had loads of energy--the older daughter was all giggles and the younger one is at that adorable age where she's just started walking, and getting to explore under her own power is a big adventure. Between the fun location, the beautiful morning light, and the boundless energy that the two girls brought, I think we made some great photos.

Fall Portraits in Presidio Park

It's been about a year and a half since I started shooting professionally, and one of the great things about this second year has been getting the chance to work with some past clients. It's a lot of fun to watch kids grow and change over time, but more than that, it's a real honor to know that these families loved their previous sessions enough to come back. This family came to my very first mini-sessions last spring, and even though I've seen them a bunch since then (their son goes to the same preschool as mine), seeing the difference between this year's pictures and last was pretty amazing to me. This time around we met in Presidio Park, and I got quite a workout keeping up with them, especially with all the energy that their son had! I don't often get the chance to play hide-and-seek during my sessions, but that's what I love about working with kids: you never know what to expect, but it's always a lot of fun.

Family Photos in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

Considering how close I live to Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, it's kind of amazing that I'd never shot there before. I've always wanted to, though, so I suggested it to my first clients of the season, and was thrilled when they said yes! The canyon has some great trails for hiking and mountain biking, and, as you can see, for photos. This little guy was super cute--outgoing and full of energy. As a parent and a photographer, I just love getting to see kids exploring and playing, and the natural setting of the canyon preserve was perfect for that.

Family Portraits in Presidio Park

I imagine this would come as a surprise to most of my clients but for most of my life most people--including me--have thought of me as being kind of quiet and introverted. In fact, going into this business, my biggest fear was that my natural shyness would get in the way of establishing the necessary rapport with my subjects.  I'm still not sure how it happened but somehow photography has managed to bring me out of my shell, and one of my favorite parts of working with these wonderful families is getting a chance to talk to them and find out what we have in common. As it turned out, this particular family and I had more in common than I originally thought.  Not only do our kids go to the same daycare (where I met them, of course) but the husband and I both lived in the same Orange County town around the same time, even though neither of us is from there. Plus, even though we're from opposite sides of California, they knew a bunch of people who I went to high school with! It never ceases to amaze me how small the world can be.

For this session we met up in Presidio Park, which overlooks Old Town and the Mission Valley area.  Presidio Park is a great venue for photograph, with both beautiful architecture and green, open spaces.  I had a great time working with them, and together we created some wonderful family portraits.

Vacation Portraits in Balboa Park

San Diego is one of those few, special towns that's both a great place to live and a great place to visit, and what better way to take your memories home than with some fun family portraits? I got to meet this wonderful family just before they had to head home to Chicago--fortunately, the relatives they were here visiting knew my work from the mini-session we did last spring, so when the idea of a photo session came up, I was the lucky guy who got the call. As I'm sure you can imagine, four boys and two girls meant this session was full of energy. As I like to say: two families means twice as much fun!

Family Photos at Liberty Station

I'm not really sure why, but even though I'd been to Liberty Station a bunch of times before--I even took a photo seminar there, once--it never occurred to me to do a shoot there. Fortunately, it's a favorite spot for the family I worked with this past Sunday, and I had the privilege of shooting a Lifestyle Session there with them. I just love getting to know new places and new people, and getting to do both on the same day while helping make some great photographs was a real treat.

Portraits at Home

I love getting to work with families in their own spaces. Not only are kids the most comfortable in places they know, but nothing brings out their personalities better than being at home. I felt very lucky to get to work with this great family on Saturday morning, and as you can see, they loved their new back yard!

"Grad" Session

I got the chance this past weekend to shoot a quick "grad" session with Lucas and his family--yes, it is September, but who says you can't take grad portraits in the fall?  Lucas had an easy-going, laid-back way about him that made for a fun and relaxed session, and I had a great time working with him and the whole family.

Family Photos in Balboa Park

Saturday morning was a little overcast, but while clouds don't make for the best beach weather, they do provide excellent light for outdoor family portraits.  I got to hang out with three beautiful families during my summer mini-session event, and together we made some great photographs. It turned out that I had a little extra time in between sessions, so Juliette and I figured we might as well take advantage of it and get some photos of our own, as well.

Spring Mini-Session Event

I wanted to get things started off with a bang, and I figured what better way to do that than to offer free mini-sessions? It was a beautiful day in Old Poway Park, and I had a great time working with a whole bunch of wonderful families. Mini-Sessions 1
